Another two weeks has gone by. Sorry about that. Time flies when you’re having fun. Sammy is doing well. We are back on Accutane after two weeks off and it’s a struggle. He takes it but not without a half-hour of drama every morning and every night. I keep thinking it’ll become routine at some point but we’re not there yet. His lips and face are getting cracked again but I’m getting better at smearing stuff on him while he’s asleep.
We went to SeaWorld yesterday and had a great time. The kids fed the dolphins and then we ran through all the tubes and slides in Shamu’s Happy Harbor. Andy’s big enough now for the big kid jumpy so they had a great time doing that.
Sammy is loving karate. He’s got sparring gear and everything, he’s got a wonderful karate teacher who says he has great timing. I’ll have to post a picture of him in his karate gear. Seeing as I still haven’t gotten the Halloween photos up though, it might take a while. There is one very agro Dad who waits in the lobby during lessons. His son is only four and a half and is already a purple belt. He made sure to tell me all about it. I was talking to him and let him know that Sammy had just started and really liked it and he looked at me and said. “Well, why is he already wearing a white belt then? Did he earn that white belt? Do you know you have to earn every belt you wear? He shouldn’t be wearing the white belt yet.” I was tempted to tell him where to go and enlighten him on the fact that Sammy had “earned” any belt he wanted but I just smiled and said that the sensei said he’d earned it.
Sammy really wants to go to school. He carries around his backpack and his lunchbox and keeps asking me when he can go. I’m going to talk to Dr. Bolotin about it again next week and see what she says. On the upside, Sammy really loves his home teacher and is working well with her. He really loves having her come and she’s just fantastic with him.
Nowhere in the handout they gave me titled “How to Encourage Your Child to Wear Their Hearing Aids” does it say to throw the hearing aids across the room as hard as you can, pound your fists on the wall and yell “damn it” very loudly. Whenever I “suggest” (that’s what the handout says) that we put them in for a few hours every day Sam says, “Ok, mom but not right now.” When I finally get him to try them, we struggle to get them in, they hurt or start to beep in a matter of three seconds and then Sam says, “Can I take them out now?” This is after two separate appointments to have them adjusted. Argh. We have new molds on the way so hopefully that will help and actually today he did a little bit better with them (we might have gone ten whole minutes).
Andy is potty trained! Wohoo! He did great – only a few accidents here and there but he gets to move up the three year-old class at school and I really love that teacher. I think he’ll like it much better. He’s doing a little better in preschool but still isn’t thrilled about it. At the parent teacher conference (which is actually a funny thing in itself at the preschool age) the teacher told me that he’s a very shy boy. I almost fell out of my chair. The little boy who goes up to people in the grocery store and asks them their name and then tells them about his day, his life, and whatever else comes to mind is shy at school. Makes me think he’s still not comfortable there. I asked him not to throw something the other day and he said very sternly. “Hey, mom, pick on someone your own size.”
