Sammy’s home early from school today because his tummy hurts him and he’s pretty wiped out. This is the first day since we finished up chemo that he’s looked a little listless. He was fine when I dropped him off at school but was looking very tired when I picked him up. We went over to Darcy and Mike’s on Saturday night and all the kids were running around and having a great time and you wouldn’t have been able to tell that Sammy had just finished a week of chemo. We had the Bonebrake boys over yesterday morning and they were all out skateboarding and climbing trees. We have a blood check appointment for 3pm after school but I’m calling to see if I can’t get it earlier since we’re home early anyway. I wouldn’t be surprised if he needs blood today, in addition to being tired, he’s looking a little pale.
Sammy was a champ last week and didn’t even flinch for his IV for the Catscan and he did everything the nurses asked him to. He was cheerful and happy all week. The GCSF shot in his leg last night was another story. It was a horror – I won’t go into details. I think the anticipation of it was worse than the actual shot and I hope the next one won’t be so bad. We don’t have to do another one until after the next round of chemo because we got the stronger, longer lasting shot.
We get chemo in the treatment room because we are outpatient. The treatment room has eight beds on each side. If you ever need inspiration to do something nice for a cancer kid, go hang out in the treatment room. Every twenty minutes or so a little one is screaming in terror as the nurses and parents hold them down for a port access or an IV start. It’s a little unnerving. The nurses, by the way, were fantastic all week. They are so good with the kids
Neil did get the Nifurtimox and we’ve been on it for five days now. There are no side effects as of yet and Sammy just pops it like he pops any other pill three times a day. Dr. Scholler has been extremely helpful and hopeful. It’s great to have her on our team.
I’m getting some work done and then will get to take Andy to preschool for the first time in a week. He’s excited about that but immediately asked “Who’s picking me up?” I hope that I am but that will depend on whether or not Sammy needs blood. Andy was very happy to have us home over the weekend and all together. The Halloween costumes arrived and the boys have been dressing up in them for a week. They look great, Andy has the Captain America salute down and Sam has some wicked looking claws for his Wolverine outfit. I just hope the actual costumes make to Halloween. Sam and Andy and I put up our Halloween decorations yesterday. Charlie is good. I came home one night last week from the after a long day and he gave me the biggest grin. It was awesome. He turned seven weeks last Friday, I can’t believe it. The jury is still out on eye color and hair color. I think his eyes might turn hazel or green. Neil thinks they’ll be brown. Hair is looking reddish brown.
We’ll try school again tomorrow and hope for a better outcome. Tomorrow after school we meet with a doctor in Encinitias about Vitamin C infusions and then we have radiation at 5:15pm.
