We had scans today. We had a very rocky start. I had to lie on the CT scan table with Sammy to get him to stay still. He was hungry (he was NPO for the scans, meaning no food or water since midnight) and cranky from waking up so early and I’d conned them into not giving him anesthesia because he’s usually so good and he hates anesthesia. I assured them repeatedly it would be absolutely no problem for him to lie still for the scans. Weren’t they delighted with me when I brought him in kicking, crying and screaming that he wasn’t going to do it. I thought we were going to have to reschedule for another day but once we came about the solution of me getting on the table with him (him on his back, me on my tummy talking to him the whole time) he calmed down and didn’t move a muscle. They got good pictures. After the CT scan we did the bone scan. He didn’t move for the whole 45 minutes which is pretty tough for a four year-old. I told him Sam and Superdog stories.
The bone scan is hard for me because the monitor of his skeleton is facing me so I’ve seen the picture develop on the screen every time. I see the bones light up (lighting up is not good) and I panic. They also light up in growth spots though so every time they light up doesn’t neccessarily mean anything bad. It looked to me today like he lit up in the same spots on his knees where he’s been lighting up in past scans but I can’t really tell because the contrast on the monitor is sometimes different. I’m also constantly trying to read the faces of the nurses who give us the scans but I couldn’t tell much today. Anyway, I know just enough to be dangerous and for it to drive me crazy all weekend until we get the actual results on Tuesday.
We’ll meet with the surgeon next week to talk about surgery after the scan results.
Everyone please think shrinkage and clear bones! I’ll post on Tuesday as soon as we get results. In the meantime, I’m in for a lot of late shows. Hope everyone has a great Memorial Day Weekend.
