Hawaii and Halloween

boys on the front of the boat on the way to snorkeling
Sorry for the lack of update. We just got back from six days in Mauii. We had a great time snorkeling and going down the pool slide and relaxing in general. We got great tickets through an Alaskan Airlines promotion and decided we had to go back. It was beautiful weather and great to get away from it all. I even forgot my cell phone so was completely disconnected for six whole days. We did a boat trip to a couple of great snorkeling spots and Andy was all over the snorkeling. He swam right next to big turtles and wanted to explore everywhere, he was snorkeling right off the beach at the Sheraton Hotel. He also did some cliff jumping off of Black Rock that was pretty brave for a seven year-old. Neil and I both jumped with him and we had to get up our nerves after looking over the edge. Charlie loved the pool and the pool slide. We snuck him in to the big kids slide at our hotel with Mommy’s wristband and he went on it all day with us. He was enchanted by the parrots at the hotel that could talk. He kept wanting to go down and talk with them and seemed to equate Hawaii with talking birds. Neil and I had a nice relaxing time too. Many memories of Sam and our trip there two years ago. We went back and said hello to the bell captain who Neil befriended and who’d helped us get to the hospital in the middle of the night when Sam spiked a fever. He was very touched that Neil had come back to say hello. It was a great family trip and we needed it.
Now we are gearing up for Halloween. We put up our decorations yesterday and the outside of our house is very spooky. Tomorrow is the carnival at school and Charlie’s preschool parade. We will carve pumpkins tonight and will make sure that there are three. Once again my friends are rescuing me. We will trick or treat in a new neighborhood this year for something different. Rebecca has invited us to start at her house and do her neighborhood which is very kid friendly and the boys are excited. Thanksgiving will be at Lisa’s house and my mom is flying out for that. Christmas is still up in the air but we’ll figure something out. We may need to stick around here after our big vacation splurge
Basketball has started and soccer and baseball will wind down this month, we should have a slower winter schedule but who knows. I’ll post some pictures of the boys in their costumes ( Charlie is the cutest ninja and Andy is a punk zombie rocker/skater dude). Thought you might like Sammy’s early Halloween pics.

Oh Marg, Such wonderful pictures of the boys in Hawaii! I especially liked the big smile on Neil’s face as he and Charlie were stearing the boat! Such darling pictures of Sam on his first 3 Halloweens! I have some of him as the clown and the cowboy! Please do send a picture of the boys at Holloween: I can’t even begin to imagine what Andy will be or what he’ll even look like scary, funny or both! I hope your crazy mixed up tree is growing and will bear fruit whenever it is supposed to! I’m looking forward to spending Thanksgiving with y’all. It will be a first in many different ways and sad! You and Neil have so much to be thankful for: your beautiful sons, your wonderful friends, your loving supporting families, your health but, most of all– Yours and Neil’s love for each other and the boys and your amazing ability to endure, fulfill and surpass each day “To the Max” and “Because of Sam” you will get through the hollidays!

Wow! What an amazing website! Aloha Neil and ohana, I can’t tell you how much it meant to me that you went out of your way to find me at the Westin.I’m so glad I was working that day. Although shocked by the news that your beautiful son had passed, I would’ve been really bummed if I didn’t get to see you and your family. SO THANK YOU!!! Myself, being a cancer survivor I can truly say this website in memories of “Sam” is AMAZING! Sam was very blessed to have such a loving and caring family,as you were blessed to spend almost ten years with an amazing child. He will never be forgotten! Aloha and God Bless, Rob Myers

I love the photos of Sam…so sweet. Thank you for writing about hunting down Mr. Myers who helped you last time. Such great comments from him and Samsgram. It restores a little faith in the world to know that caring people are out there, willing to help, and are touched by such special families. Tears and smiles from your post!

Loved your latest posting and seeing all those smiles and looks of pure absorption on your boys’ faces. Glad that Hawaii provided you all with a much-needed pickup in spirits. We’ve got our fingers and toes crossed that the Hutchisons will come “home” to New Mexico for Christmas! After all, Andy has to try out that neat snowboard that Santa brought him last year….I’ve ordered up a fab snowpack just for him! Besides, we old geezers need some youngsters (and not just ANY youngsters) around to make it a real Christmas. Do come and let us pamper you to the extent you’ll allow us. We love you/your amazing family so much. Stevie & Dad

Hello, just wanted to stop by and let you guys know you and yours are much, much thought of over here in New York City. I hadn’t checked the blog in a bit, and looking at the new and old pictures had me both smiling and crying. I’m glad Andy and Charlie are doing so well, you are wonderful parents.
All goes pretty well here — simon is dealing w/ a non-cancer issue (but caused by cranial radiation), he has two “cerebral cavernomas” — he had a bleed in august and has been having excruciating headaches ever since. We just started w/ a new neurologist at NYU and he’s starting a new medicine, so hopefully will resolve soon. Simon is making a video about the need for more pediatric cancer funding and he interviewed a number of people over the weekend who are in for mskcc. We’re also gearing up for the Kids Walk, already have 39 school team leaders signed up! Well, that’s enough of an update for now. Sending hugs and love your way from the big apple, SHIRLEY
