August 17, 2005 (Day +12)

Sam is doing great. Still has to start eating & drinking again but everything else is looking great. Most of the antibiotics & antifungals will be discontinued tomorrow and it’s really just him starting to eat for us to be discharged. When we discharge, we’ll still stay up in Duarte for a few weeks since he may always bounce back into the hospital unexpectedly. The doctor explained it like this: by wiping out Sam’s bone marrow, we wiped out his blood factory. The stem cell transplant rebuilt the blood factory. Now it’s a new operation (same owner 🙂 but there are always some hiccups with startup operations and that’s what will happen with Sam. His platelet levels will fluctuate and may need transfusions, etc.
One last thing: the doctor said that the biggest risk for Sam now is a relapse. Great news, in a sense, since this means the infection danger has passed. So, please keep Sam in your thoughts & prayers. The support has been wonderful.
